Privacy policy

Local Record is a listing of live shows in the independent music scene, a place for bands, venues and promoters to run those shows, and a ticket seller. This policy explains what we collect when you use it, what we do with it, and what you can do about it. "We" and "us" means [Local Record legal entity name]; "you" means anyone using localrecord.app or our apps.

The short version

  • You can browse without an account. We count page views with a random id kept in your browser, not with third-party trackers or advertising cookies.
  • With an account we keep what you tell us (name, handle, email, birthday, city, genres) and what you do (follows, shows you are going to, tickets, messages).
  • A band, venue or promoter only gets your email or phone number if you said yes to hearing from that specific sender, and you can take it back at any time.
  • We do not sell your personal information and we do not show ads.
  • You can download everything we hold about you, or delete your account, from Settings.

What we collect

Account details. When you sign up we ask for an email address (it is how you sign in), a name, a handle, your birthday (to confirm you are at least 13) and, if you choose, a phone number, a profile photo, a short bio, your home city and the genres you like.

The waitlist. While Local Record is invite only, an email address without an account can join the waitlist from the home page. We keep the address, when it joined and the version of the agreement it accepted, and email it once (twice at most if it asks again) about getting access. Reply to that email or write to support to be taken off.

What you do on Local Record. The artists, venues and organizations you follow and the choices you made about hearing from each; the shows you mark as going or interested; tickets you buy; messages you send; photos and videos you post to a show; reports and support requests you send us.

Organization details. If you run an artist, venue or professional organization on Local Record we keep what you enter about it (its profile, members, shows, holds, offers, settlements, budgets, guest lists and broadcasts) and, if it sells tickets, the details needed to pay it (held by Stripe, see below).

Usage and device data. When you open an event, artist or venue page we record a page view with a random visitor id stored in your browser's local storage, so we can count unique visitors. We keep each visitor id for two days and the daily totals after that. Our servers also see your IP address and browser type when you connect, as every website does; we use them to keep the service working and secure, not to profile you.

Payment details. When you buy a ticket you pay on Stripe's checkout page. Stripe handles your card; we never see or store the full card number. We keep the order: what you bought, the amounts, the email the tickets go to, and Stripe's reference numbers.

How we use it

  • To run the service: sign you in, show your profile, deliver your tickets and messages, and let organizations run their shows.
  • To send you email you asked for or need: sign-in codes, ticket receipts, notices when a show you have tickets to or said you were going to is cancelled, postponed or moved, and replies to support requests.
  • To pass email from bands, venues and promoters to you, only if you said yes to that sender (see Fans and consent).
  • To keep Local Record safe: check new content against our terms, review reports, stop spam and fraud.
  • To understand what is used, in totals (page views, unique visitors, follower counts) that we show to the organizations behind those pages.

We rely on performing our agreement with you for the first two, on your consent for marketing email from organizations, and on our legitimate interest in running a safe, working service for the rest. Where the law requires consent, we ask for it.

Fans and consent: what bands, venues and promoters see

When you follow an artist, venue or organization, we ask whether that sender may email you and whether it may text you. Each sender is asked separately, and the answer is yours to change at any time in Settings, under Following.

  • If you said no (or never said yes), the organization sees you only as part of a count, such as its number of followers and the cities they are in. Your name, email and phone are not shared.
  • If you said yes to email, the organization can see your name, handle, city and email address and can send you broadcasts through Local Record. If you said yes to texts, it can see your phone number. It can export those people it has consent for.
  • Public follower and going counts are only shown once they are large enough that no one can be picked out.
  • Every broadcast has a one-click unsubscribe link for that sender and a link to manage all your subscriptions. If you mark one as spam, we stop email from that sender to you.

Organizations that receive your details under your consent are responsible for how they use them outside Local Record, and must follow our terms and the law.

Who we share it with

We share personal information only as described here. The services that run Local Record for us process it on our behalf and under their own security commitments:

  • Clerk (accounts and sign-in): your email address, sign-in codes and session.
  • Convex (our database and servers): everything the service stores.
  • Resend (email delivery): the address and contents of each email we send, plus delivery results such as bounces and spam complaints, which we use to stop mailing addresses that do not work.
  • Stripe (payments): ticket purchases and, for organizations that sell tickets, their payout accounts. Stripe acts as its own controller for the payment data it collects under its privacy policy.
  • Cloudflare R2 (file storage): photos and videos you upload.
  • Apple (Apple Music and Apple Maps): we look up artists and places; we do not send them your personal information.
  • Vercel (hosting the website): standard request data such as IP address.

When you buy a ticket, the organization selling the show receives your name, email and order so it can run the door, refund you and contact you about the show. When you message an organization or a person, they see what you send. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety, or as part of a sale or reorganization of our business, in which case this policy continues to apply.

What is public

Your profile page (name, handle, photo, city, bio and genres) is public unless you make it private in Settings, under Privacy & safety. The shows you are going to and have been to are hidden unless you switch them on. Posts you add to a show are public with your handle. We never show your birthday, email or phone number on your profile.

Cookies and local storage

We use cookies set by Clerk to keep you signed in, and your browser's local and session storage for things like the visitor id above, a show you tried to save before signing in, and notices you dismissed. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party analytics trackers.

How long we keep it

We keep your account information until you delete your account. Page-view visitor ids are deleted after two days. When you delete your account we delete your profile, follows and consent choices, going and interested marks, memberships, show-crew seats and direct conversations, and take you out of group conversations. Some things stay: orders and tickets remain the selling organization's sales records (and are kept for tax and accounting, typically seven years), messages you already sent in a group stay visible to its members, posts you added to a show keep your handle as their byline (ask us through Help & feedback to remove them), and support requests stay until they are resolved. Email addresses on our do-not-mail list (hard bounces and spam complaints) are kept so we do not mail them again.

Your choices and rights

  • Download your data: Settings, Your data, Download my data gives you one file with everything tied to your account.
  • Delete your account: Settings, Your data, Delete account. If you are the only owner of an organization, hand it to someone else or delete it first.
  • Correct your details: Settings, Edit profile and Account.
  • Stop email from one sender: Settings, Following, or the unsubscribe link in any broadcast.
  • Control notifications and quiet hours: Settings, Notifications.

Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, Virginia, the UK or the EU) you may also have the right to know, access, correct, delete or port your information, to object to or restrict some uses, and to appeal a decision we make about your request. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising. To use any right not covered by Settings, write to us through Help & feedback; we will answer within the time the law sets and will not treat you differently for asking.

Children

Local Record is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. Onboarding asks for a birthday and refuses anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, tell us and we will delete it.

Security

Data travels over HTTPS, sign-in uses one-time codes rather than passwords, uploads go through short-lived signed links, and staff access is limited to people who need it. No system is perfectly secure; if we learn of a breach that affects you, we will tell you as the law requires.

Where your data is processed

Local Record is run from the United States and our providers process data in the United States and other countries. If you use Local Record from elsewhere, your information is transferred to and processed in those countries under the safeguards our providers offer.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when what we do changes, and change the date at the top. If a change is significant we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect.
